COVID-19 Information and Updates

Keeping Our Community Healthy

EFFECTIVE MARCH 17 THROUGH MARCH 31, TO FULLY SUPPORT COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES HEALTH DEPARTMENT GUIDELINES, YMCA OF GREATER WHITTIER WILL BE SUSPENDING ALL OPERATIONS AT OUR BRANCHES WITH THE EXCEPTION OF CHILD CARE AND SERVING OF MEALS TO CHILDREN.

During these unsettling times, let’s be mindful of kindness. We can counter stigma and fear by learning and sharing facts. Viruses do not target specific racial or ethnic groups.

No confirmed cases of exposure of COVID-19 have been reported at our facilities and/or programs.

The YMCA Greater Whittier is committed to the safety and health of our members, staff, and community. With the growing concern about the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), we are taking precautions in our facilities, programs and services. As we continue to monitor the situation, we will keep you informed.

Child Care

Most school districts in the greater Whittier area have closed during the time frame of March 16 – April 3.

We know this closure poses a significant disruption for our families. To assist families without other options for child care, we will be expanding our child care services at our branch locations in East Whittier and Uptown Whittier.

This includes:

Preschool (Ages: 2- 5) and School Age programming (Grades: Kindergarten – 7th grade)

6:30 am – 6:30 pm – Monday – Friday.

Spots are limited and priority will be given to children of our first responders.

Call the Uptown Whittier YMCA Family Center at 562-907-6530 or the East Whittier YMCA Family Center at 562-943-7241 for more information.

Additionally, we will be serving free, healthy meals to ALL children in the area at both branches.

Breakfast will be served from 7:30-9:30 am and lunch will be served from 12:30-1:30pm.

Starting Tuesday, March 17, meals will be available as a grab-and-go option.

YMCA Cleaning Protocols

The YMCA of Greater Whittier has increased our cleaning protocols throughout our branches. We have bulk purchased effective sanitizers for COVID-19, non-latex gloves and pre-moistened gym wipes for fitness facilities.

Staff at all levels are responding by taking a more proactive approach with day to day operations, including increasing cleaning activities of our equipment and fitness floors and our custodial services provider has increased surface cleaning and janitorial staff hours.

Keeping Yourself and Others Healthy

  2. Put distance between yourself and other people
  3. Stay home if you are sick, except to get medical care
  4. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or use the inside of your elbow
