COVID-19 Information and Updates

Keeping Our Community Healthy

The YMCA of Greater Whittier is being asked to help during this crisis and we need your help. Our community is experiencing a very serious situation in which many families providing essential services to support our communities’ needs do not have child care. Employees at hospitals, first responders, military personnel and all those on the front lines helping us to end this pandemic need to know that their children are taken care of. Right now, we are offering care at 2 locations in Whittier and partnering with our local health care facilities to ensure their employees have access to safe, dependable childcare.

During these extensive school closures, we have ensured that children 18 and under do not go hungry. Since March 16 we have served more than 5,000 meals to children in our community who might not have eaten without our support. Each day, families may pick up breakfast and lunch at either of our branch locations.

The need is real and we cannot do this without you. We ask that if you are able, that you continue your membership as your fees are helping to keep these critical services in childcare and food distribution available to our community. Thank you for staying with us.

No confirmed cases of exposure of COVID-19 have been reported at our facilities and/or programs.

The YMCA Greater Whittier is committed to the safety and health of our members, staff, and community. With the growing concern about the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), we are taking precautions in our facilities, programs and services. As we continue to monitor the situation, we will keep you informed.

Child Care

Most school districts in the greater Whittier area have transitioned to online learning for the remainder of the academic year.

We know this poses a significant challenge for our families. To assist families without other options for child care, we will be expanding our child care services at our branch locations in East Whittier and Uptown Whittier.

This includes:

Preschool (Ages: 2- 5) and School Age programming (Grades: Kindergarten – 7th grade)

6:30 am – 7:30 pm – Monday – Friday.

Spots are limited and priority will be given to children of essential workers.

Call the Uptown Whittier YMCA Family Center at 562-907-6530 or the East Whittier YMCA Family Center at 562-943-7241 for more information.

Food Service

We are serving free, healthy meals to ALL children in the area at both branches.

Uptown Grab and Go Service time is  12:00-1:30 PM*

East Whittier Grab and Go Service time is 9:00-11:00 AM*

Weekend meal kits are now available and can be picked up during the Friday Service times at either branch.

*To mitigate the exposure of our community, we have condensed our service times. 2 breakfast meals and 2 lunch meals will be given to each child during our weekday service times.

This includes the use of masks, latex gloves and sanitizers certified to kill the COVID-19 virus.
